What to Do at Mountain High: Attractions & Activities

Mt High Ski Resort Wrightwood CA

Mt High Ski Resort Wrightwood CA. Buy your reduced cost lift tickets here.

Mountain High offers exciting activities the whole family can enjoy and this Southern California ski resort is home to world-class competitions that attract thousands of spectators each winter.  In January 2012, the Nike Chosen Series was held at Mountain High and ten of Nike’s top riders battled it out under the lights, smoke, and music with mind-blowing action for all those who attended.  Kids love the annual Easter egg hunt, and parents will be thrilled to know that over $5,000 in tickets and discounts are hidden around the mountain.  The Enhanced Family Learning Center helps students understand the basic concepts of skiing such as turning, stopping, and balancing.  Mountain High’s new Magic Forest is fun for all ages, and by focusing on the environment around them, students are provided a more natural and interactive learning experience.  Off-season activities in Wrightwood include:

  • Hiking
  • Disc golf
  • Dining
  • Sightseeing
  • Shopping

From breakfast nooks to BBQ pits, you’ll find culinary delights in the quaint village of Wrightwood, CA.

What to Expect (Temperature, Weather, Etc)

Temperatures in the mountains average 20 to 30 degrees colder than the cities, but staying warm is easy. The best choice is water-resistant, layered clothing that can be added or removed as the weather changes. It is always best to be prepared as conditions can and do change rapidly at high elevations. If your clothes are not water resistant, a water repellent spray can be applied. With your equipment, be sure to include warm gloves and a hat or beanie. Remember, the majority of your body’s heat is lost through your head. A simple beanie can do wonders to keep you warm, especially during a storm or periods of snowmaking. Ultraviolet rays are more powerful at high elevations as well. Regardless of skin color or complexion, everyone needs to wear protective sunscreen and UV-certified sunglasses even on overcast days since ultraviolet rays can penetrate the cloud cover. Should you forget any of these important items, the Mountain High Sport Shops, located at both resorts and in the town of Wrightwood, carry the latest in clothing and equipment for winter enthusiasts.

Mountain High provides the most accurate and up-to-date snow reports in the region. We offer Real Time Cameras, daily photos and weekly videos to give you the broadest view of the conditions. It is important to check the Mountain High Snow Report before traveling to the resort, because the weather may be completely different from that it is at home. Santa Ana winds, for instance, blow warm in the valleys but cold and dry in mountains causing temperature differences of up to 40 degrees. Your view from home is also of the southern or sunny side of the mountain where snow rarely lasts. Mountain High is located on the north side where powder stays for long periods of time making the snow report even more important. To keep you abreast of the conditions, Mountain High also offers the Powder Alert, a free email service that details upcoming storms, recent snowfalls, special events, ticket deals and much, much more.

Review | IRIS by Cirque du Soliel at The Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles

Whether you are a Southern California native or you are traveling to Los Angeles for vacation or business one thing that should not be missed is the new Cirque du Soleil show at The Kodak Theatre.  The show is titled IRIS and is an imaginative journey through the world of film and cinema with a twist that only Cirque du Soleil can achieve.  This is the first Cirque du Soleil production which has a permanent home in the heart of the film making industry and is a visual splendor and an event your family and friends will enjoy.  The show is definitely on par with the Cirque du Soleil productions from Vegas such as KA, Mystere, O, and LOVE and is a well fitted production to their theatrical arsenal.

Title: Hand to Hand | Picture credit : Matt Beard © 2011 Cirque du Soleil

IRIS is a story that depicts the journey of two hopeful and aspiring actors, Buster and Scarlett, and the struggles and success met by so many that venture into the world of film and cinema.  It begins with the simple development of the soundstage and then leads you into a world of musical production and blurs the lines of reality and imagination.  Like the theatre and the big screen, the story line for IRIS provides a story line that places the main characters in many different roles and plots that are used in Hollywood films.  It provides a natural progression of the evolution of film and theatre which is reflected in costumes and sets on IRIS.   The production is fully loaded with all of the awe striking acrobatics and tests of physical endurance that are characteristic of any great Cirque du Soleil show.  This show is marked unique though in the usage of props that are key components in this storyline.   Hollywood has been a continual evolution of special effects and how it can convince the viewer on what is reality versus fantasy.  As movie production has progressed the special effects from computer generated images gives the studios the ability to create a finished product not achievable 20-30 years ago.  This is the case here with IRIS and the use of its special props that gives the viewers a product that has not been delivered before.

The costume design in IRIS also is tied perfectly to Hollywood and the world of film.  One of the acts is a tribute to Dick Tracy and has colorful cops and robbers themed costumes with the usage of trampolines on a rooftop setting with neon lights and a great backdrop of a city skyline.  In another scene characters wear costumes that resemble the furniture and fixtures of a room.  From a lamp to upholstered chairs to a moose head on the wall that all come to life in an instant as in the world of film.  In another scene the performers moves are reflected onto a screen that in essence give the viewer the feel that they are watching a film strip and the moves are displayed on a screen in frames.  The performers engage with one another that makes it create a completely different image when projected onto the screen and the usage of color and light transforms the reality of the performers into a stunning result that must be seen in person.  In another act your senses are delved into a full movie set that is precisely coordinated and no area of the stage is left without a well orchestrated performance within a performance.   The show is capped off with an aerial acrobats studded in light grabbing costumes and provides a play on the 3D.  All of the great acts and performers are led by the musical score produced by Danny Elfman, who is one of the best and well-known people in music and for scores on the biggest movies in Hollywood.

IRIS is a well constructed cinematic production and should be on everyone’s list to see.  While there are a multitude of things to do in Southern California an evening should be made to see this show.  It is both funny and entertaining and definitely delivers on the product that everyone has come to expect from Cirque du Soleil.  IRIS !  IRIS!  IRIS!
